Townhome development that faced Bossier City neighborhood opposition begins construction
A new townhouse development in the Stockwell Road area that faced neighborhood opposition last year has begun construction.
The nearly 43-acre Lakewood Villas Townhome Development, located adjacent to the Dollar General on the corner of Shed Rd and Stockwell Rd in Bossier City, is described as an “upscale private townhome development.”
In March of 2024, area residents voiced their concerns, including:
The medium-density housing project is located near single-family homes.
Potential flooding issues.
Increased traffic issues.
The impact on Stockwell Place Elementary School.
The effect on property values in the area.
“I just want to remind everybody that eight years ago there was a mandatory evacuation of the neighborhood due to flooding the property was completely underwater and the only thing that stopped the water from coming in the surrounding homes was the 24-hour round the clock sandbagging by the National Guard and Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office,” Sarah George said at the time.
The development was approved by the Metropolitan Planning Commission at its October 14, 2024, meeting.
MPC Executive Director Carlotta Askew-Brown told BossierNow Thursday that the project has been scaled down from 468 units to 279.
Residents worried about additional traffic at the busy intersection might be disappointed to learn that a traffic study determined that additional turn lanes and other improvements to the intersection of Shed Road and Stockwell Road were not warranted. The portion of Shed Road in front of the development and east of the intersection will be widened to meet minimum street standards.
The study said the development would have a “slight impact” on the intersection of Shed Road and the I-220 eastbound offramp during the peak hours.
The traffic analysis also said the development would have “minimal impact on the intersections of Shed Road at Stockwell Road and Stockwell Road at US 80, and both intersections will continue to operate at current levels-of-service during the peak hours.”
Drainage on the property was considered adequate. In an analysis, Bossier City consulting engineer Ben Rauschenbach said, “Under nearly every scenario, the proposed conditions improve or have no impact to downstream drainage structures.”
The original proposal for the townhouse community promised amenities including a clubhouse, game room, coffee bar, gym, yoga room, business center, outdoor pool, barbecue areas, dog parks, and walking path. However, Askew-Brown said that only a clubhouse and pool have been approved so far.
When is Trick-or-Treating in Bossier City?
The Bossier City Police Department urges children and parents to keep safety in mind while trick-or-treating on Halloween tonight.
“With increased foot traffic in neighborhoods, especially after dark, families and drivers are urged to take extra precautions,” BCPD said in a release. Motorists should be particularly watchful for trick-or-treaters.
BCPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Shawn Poudrier added that parents are asked to end door-to-door trick-or-treating by 8 p.m. as a courtesy to residents.
Sheriff presents $70,000 to local youth charities
Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington recently presented a check totaling $70,000 to representatives from several youth-focused charities in our area. The funds were raised through the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office’s first annual “Kids Shoot for Youth Charities” event held earlier this month.
The proceeds from this event were distributed to St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the Gingerbread House, Shriners Children’s, Easter Seals, and the March of Dimes.
“Seeing local people come together for such a meaningful cause is truly inspirational,” Sheriff Whittington said. “Every dollar raised represents hope, compassion, and the strong spirit of the community. I could not be more proud of our sponsors, deputies, volunteers, and young participants who made this possible.”
Planning is already underway for next year’s “Kids Shoot for Youth Charities” event.
