Bossier Parish Fire District #1 and volunteers attempt to rescue horse from pond
Bossier Parish Fire District #1 faced a rare and heartbreaking scene Saturday when the department responded to an animal rescue call.
At 11:50 am Saturday, BPFD1 were dispatched to Parker Road in the Bellevue community. First-arriving units found a horse submerged in a pond, unable to get out due to deep mud and pond sediment.
Units worked tirelessly alongside the horse’s owner and other horse owners from the area, freeing the horse after approximately an hour and a half.
A local vet was requested to the scene, and unfortunately, due to the extent of the injury and illness to the animal, the decision was made to euthanize the horse.
BPFD1 would like to thank all the volunteers, local ranchers, neighbors, and Dr. Makensie Sonnier for their incredible efforts to save the animal.
Louisiana auto insurance rate cuts announced by two companies
Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple has approved Allstate North American Insurance Company’s filing for a 7.6% rate decrease for its 10,746 personal auto policyholders in Louisiana. The change takes effect on Jan. 8, 2026.
Temple also approved Encompass Insurance Company of America’s National General program filing for a 15% decrease, which impacts the company’s 1,516 personal auto policyholders and takes effect on Dec. 8, 2025.
Rate changes are statewide averages, so each policyholder’s rate change will vary based on their individual risk.
ANAIC and Encompass are both Allstate companies, and these rate decreases apply only to policyholders of these two specific companies. Consumers may review all property and auto rate filings online with the Louisiana Department of Insurance’s new user-friendly rate filing search tool.
“This is more good news for Louisiana drivers, but we have much more work to do,” said Commissioner Temple. “We must be proactive and continue improving our regulatory and legal environment to ensure more Louisiana drivers see the results of our reform efforts.”
“While it’s too early to measure the impact, the recent tort reform efforts reinforce confidence that Louisiana is committed to creating a healthier market for both consumers and insurers, and we’re already seeing signs of increased competition for our business in the state,” said an Allstate representative.
DOTD announces project to overlay portion of road in Bossier Parish
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has announced the start of a project to repair a route in Bossier Parish.
Work is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, weather permitting.
Full-depth patching to repair the roadway base, milling to remove the old asphalt, new asphalt paving, and new roadway striping will begin on LA 614 from US 80 to LA 157 in Haughton.
This project is funded through House Bill 406 of the 2022 Louisiana regular legislative session.
Duck Dam Road reopens at Bodcau WMA, LDWF announces
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has reopened Duck Dam Road following completion of the Wetland Enhancement NAWCA project, which included refurbishing water control structures and road improvements.
Bodcau WMA is located in Bossier and Webster parishes and is approximately 17 miles northeast of Bossier City. Travel north on Louisiana Highway 157 from I-20 at Haughton to Bellevue, then follow the signs to Bodcau WMA.
There is a free public shooting range with rifle targets from 25 to 200 yards, a pistol range with 25-yard targets, and a shotgun station. The range is supervised by an approved range officer.
Available game species include white-tailed deer (archery and modern firearms), squirrel, rabbit, dove, quail, and all other small game. The deer herd is considered healthy. Waterfowl hunting is available in the 1,600 acre greentree reservoir and in the numerous sloughs and backwater flooded areas. Turkey hunting is also allowed during a short spring gobbler season. There are youth-only deer, squirrel, and turkey seasons.
There are birding and wildlife-viewing opportunities, and camping is available at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers improved camping area on the south end of Bodcau WMA and at several primitive camping areas.
All visitors to Bodcau WMA and all LDWF WMAs must have either a WMA Access Permit, Senior Hunting/Fishing License, Louisiana Sportsman’s Paradise License or Lifetime Hunting/Fishing License. Click here for more information.
