Bossier news: Haughton police seek known suspect in aggravated cruelty to animals case
There’s been another tragic animal welfare case out of Haughton.
Officers with the Haughton Police Department rescued three dogs from the 300 block of Jones Road after receiving a welfare concern call about the animals, which were left on the abandoned property.
“The dogs were previously reported to be abandoned, loose, and forced to live in poor conditions,” HPD said in a social media post. “Officers were able to identify the owner as Marlena Gaines, who does not live there. Officers learned that Gaines had dropped the dogs off and left them on the abandoned property.
“Gaines would seldomly come and feed them. All three dogs were chained to trees with only a two-to-three-foot run. One dog had both front legs broken and a second dog was lying in a pile of roofing nails from an overturned five-gallon bucket,” Haughton police added.
Authorities said the dogs would go an unknown amount of time without food or water and were left unattended for days.
HPD said all three dogs were extremely malnourished.
The Haughton Police Department requested the assistance of the Webster Parish Animal Control to rescue the dogs.
“Along with Webster Parish Animal Control, Haughton Police Department would like to thank LaMa Animal Rescue for their unwavering assistance in rescuing these dogs from there sad and forgotten living conditions,” Haughton police added.
HPD says Gaines is being sought for an outstanding arrest warrant for three counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals.
The Haughton Police Department is accepting donations of Purina One dog food and cleaning supplies for the future care of these animals. Monetary donations can be made directly to LaMa Animal Rescue.
Water hydrant testing this week in Bossier Parish
Residents serviced by the Bossier Parish Consolidated Waterworks/Sewerage District No. 1 in Haughton, Princeton, Fillmore, Red Chute, and Eastwood can expect to see fire department crews inspecting and flushing fire hydrants in the Village Water System for the next two weeks.
Bossier Fire District #1 inspectors started the flushing process in the Dogwood area and will work east to the Webster Parish line.
Each hydrant will undergo a five-minute flush to test pressure and flow rate, ensuring optimal performance for public health and firefighting operations.
Residents should be aware that hydrant flushing may cause temporary water discoloration. This is a normal result of sediment being disturbed within the water distribution system from settled water in the lines. If discoloration occurs, it is recommended that residents flush their home water systems until the water clears.
“To avoid discoloration, it’s best to hold off on washing clothes until testing is complete in your area,” CWSD #1 said in a social media post.
Bossier Sheriff’s Office hires three new employees

Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington welcomed three new members to the Bossier Sheriff’s Office team during a swearing-in ceremony Monday.
Sheriff Whittington administered the oath of office to Deputy Chelsea Jackson, officially welcoming her as the newest deputy with BPSO.
The Sheriff also welcomed Andrew Cogdill and Audrey Jordan, who were both hired as corrections officers. Cogdill and Jordan aspire to become deputies once they reach the age of 21, BPSO said.
“We are proud to have these young people join our team,” Whittington said. “They are starting their careers in public service and I’m confident they will make a positive impact in our community.”
To apply to be a Deputy, applicants must be 21 years of age. However, the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office offers Corrections Officer positions that only require applicants to be 18 years of age.
To begin the process of becoming a member of the Bossier Sheriff’s Office, call the recruiting division of the Human Resources Department to schedule a conference today. You can reach them by calling Sgt. Forrest Collins at (318) 935-2146.
