Bossier City weekend: Hurricane Alley unleashes rock power, metal fury & country soul in three epic nights
One big stage, three epic nights of vastly different entertainment. Hurricane Alley in the East Bank District will host three live, free-admission music events this weekend.
It begins tonight with the high-energy rock band Identity Crisis. A venerable favorite in the ArkLaTex, IDC takes the stage at 7 pm, playing today’s hits and 80s and 90s favorites.
Saturday night, the EBD goes loud and proud with Metal Shop bringing all of your favorite 80s hair metal rock to the Hurricane Alley stage. Metal Shop covers the greats: Gun’s ‘n Roses, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Ozzy, Metallica, Poison, Tesla, Winger, Cinderella, AC/DC, and more. It’s a true 80s rock arena-style experience, complete with spandex, eyeliner, and hairspray.
Sunday from 5 to 9 pm, it’s the return of a live country music tradition: the KRMD Free Family Concert. Featuring Trini Triggs, Dirt Road Troubadours, Shane Pons and Hailey Wright.
Louisiana to resume full SNAP benefits next week
With the end of the federal government shutdown, Louisiana has plans to resume distributing food assistance to those in need.
The Louisiana Department of Health said Thursday it will distribute 100% of federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program funds to eligible recipients who haven’t received their November benefits starting next week. Those who received 65% of their assistance during the shutdown will get the remaining 35% next week.
The Landry administration reallocated health department funds to make up for the loss of SNAP benefits at the start of November, when there was no end in sight to the federal government shutdown that began Oct. 1.
The state set up a schedule to distribute 25% of benefits per week, prioritizing the elderly and disabled who typically get their funds early in the month. Anyone who received the one-fourth portion of state-funded assistance from Nov. 1-4 will keep that amount and receive the rest of their benefits this month, the health department said.
Biedenharn Foundation gives $60k to Bossier Parish teachers
In this season of thanksgiving, two dozen Bossier Parish educators have 60,000 more blessings to count, all thanks to the Biedenharn Foundation.
They each received checks totaling $60,000 at the 12th Annual Sydney Biedenharn Educators Endowment awards ceremony to make their classroom dreams come true.
The endowment was established to carry on the legacy of Sydney Biedenharn, who taught in Bossier Parish and whose children attended schools in Benton. Her passion for teaching continues to be paid forward through the work of hundreds of Bossier Parish educators whose grants have been funded over the years and who received a portion of the $635,000 invested to date in Bossier Schools.
“We are greatly appreciative to the Biedenharn Foundation for generously blessing our schools year after year, providing teachers with classroom resources that spark curiosity and creativity in the classroom,” said Bossier Schools Superintendent Jason Rowland. “Sydney Biedenharn had a love for learning, and it’s a privilege to honor her in a way that continues to open doors of opportunity and enhance the educational experience for the students of Bossier Parish.”
Elementary winners of the 2025-26 Sydney Biedenharn Educators Endowment are: Andrea May, Bossier Elementary; Nicholas Cobb, W.T. Lewis; Cherise Kelly, Meadowview; Kirsten Day, Alyssa Kelly and Cailey Davis, Platt Elementary; Tracy Weems, Princeton; Kimmerly Laughlin, T.L. Rodes; and Danielle Chandler and Rachel Lowry, Waller Elementary.
Middle school recipients include: Randy Smith, Cope; and Jennifer Hillman, Jessica Kelly and Angela Glasscock, from Elm Grove Middle.
High school winners are: Adina Cubley, Airline High; Gray Young, Bossier Parish School for Technology and Innovative Learning (BPSTIL); and Col. Tony Zucco, Chief MSgt. Leroy Brown and Allie Lewis, Haughton High.
Those receiving grants at the K-12 campus of Plain Dealing High School are: Elizabeth Foster, Jennyne Pinter, Katherine Roberts, Kristin Tolar and DeAnthony Lyons.
Learning will come alive through the recipients’ classroom grant projects, which range from light tables for differentiated math instruction and JROTC Marksmanship Safety and Wilderness Survival Skills to DNA/RNA Protein Synthesis Modeling and Enhancing Early Literacy Through Multisensory, Science of Reading Aligned Instruction.
