AT&T reveals fiber expansion plans, faces heat from City Council on backyard access issues
An AT&T rep came before the Bossier City Council Tuesday to discuss the company's plans for further fiber installation for high-speed internet. Instead, he was mostly grilled with complaints about backyard access issues.
Wayne Stein, Associate Director of Engineering for AT&T, said fiber would be installed in 95% of the city by the end of 2026.
Work is currently ongoing in Greenacres Place, off of Shed Road just east of Benton Road, on East Texas on the north side of East Texas between Swan Lake and old Shed Road with work going all the way to I-20.
In South Bossier, AT&T is installing fiber on Panther Drive behind the old Parkway High School, and River Bend Drive and on Sligo Road just there north of the new Parkway High School.
About half of Bossier City already has AT&T fiber service.
At that point, District 1's Brian Hammons, took the mike.
"One of the biggest complaints that we get is, 'they came in my backyard. They cut the lock off my gate. They let my dog out. They left trash all in my backyard,'" Hammons said. "And it didn't just start with y'all. It started with Optimum. Then we got Xfinity. Now we've got y'all. I'm not a lawyer or a policeman, but I think it would be highly illegal for somebody to cut a lock off a gate and go in their backyard, if I'm not mistaken, even if it is to get to a utility easement in the backyard."
"I can't imagine any of our employees or contractors doing that," the AT&T rep said.
"Well, it's happened," Hammons replied. "You know, they've showed the video from their cameras on their house, them walking up with bolt cutters and cut the lock off and going in, let their dog out and going back there and digging in the backyard, and then they leave."
The AT&T reps said that door hangars are placed on houses where work is to be done, which have a phone number for residents to call if there are any problems.
Bossier Council on Aging exec airs concerns
In other business, the Council discussed the upcoming purchase of property for the Bossier Council on Aging.
Tamara Crane, executive director of the BCOA was concerned that the agency would see a reduction in building size.
"How much space are we going to get?" she asked the Council. "Amanda [Nottingham, City CAO] has explained to me that the design and space allocation cannot be finalized until the purchase of this building is done. However, Mayor Chandler did state that we were getting about 9,000 square feet of the 34,290 there. That is about half of what we have."
"So while we can trim down and consolidate offices and such, the reality is that such a reduction in that much square footage would require us to reduce or eliminate some services rather than actually grow to meet the growing demand of our senior population," she added.
Council President Chris Smith said that the COA would have more space than it currently has, when considering shared spaces in the building, such as the reception area, restrooms, and kitchen.
"I just want that to be known that we have no intention of cutting any space out for the Council on Aging. We don't want to see you reduce your services," he added.
The council also:
Gave final approval to spend $3 million to replace water meters in the city.
Authorized the installation of 4-way stop signs at both intersections of Preserve Blvd. and Collum Dr., the intersection of Fullilove Dr. and Wilder St. and at the intersection of Anita St. and Gay Blvd.
Funded a match of $350,000 for Benton Road repairs.
And approved the reappointment of Donald J. Wilhite to the Cypress Black Bayou Recreation and Water Conservation District Board of Commissioners.
Bossier City Fire Department to graduate 17 recruits from Fire Academy
Today, the Bossier City Fire Department will host the graduation for 17 recruits who have successfully completed 19 weeks of intense training in Fire and EMS.
This number reflects 12 recruits for the Bossier City Fire Department and five recruits who will join the Benton Fire Department.
The graduation will take place at 10:00 am at the Simple Church on the Boardwalk. Fire Chief Brad Zagone said he is confident that these recruits are well-prepared and ready to serve their communities.
Mayor Tommy Chandler said that he is looking forward to welcoming these new members and their families to the Bossier City Public Safety Family.
Jeff Moore named head men’s basketball coach at Bossier Parish Community College
Bossier Parish Community College has named veteran coach Jeff Moore as its new head men’s basketball coach, marking his return to the Cavaliers program two decades after first serving on staff and bringing with him deep coaching ties across Louisiana.
Moore enters his 32nd year in college coaching and his first as head coach of BPCC’s program. He joins the Cavaliers after three years at LSU, where he served as Director of Recruiting under Head Coach Matt McMahon. While in Baton Rouge, Moore helped the Tigers land multiple Top 20 high school and transfer portal classes, and LSU advanced to the 2024 NIT postseason tournament.
His coaching motto, “Success occurs when preparation comes face-to-face with opportunity,” reflects the energy and vision he brings to BPCC basketball as the Cavaliers prepare for the upcoming season.
“I could not be more excited to return to BPCC as the head coach,” Moore said. “This program has a proud history, and I look forward to building on that tradition with hard work, preparation and passion. Our student-athletes will be committed to excellence on the court, in the classroom and in the community. I’m grateful for the opportunity and eager to get started on what I know will be a great season.”
In his role at LSU, Moore’s responsibilities included identifying and evaluating recruits as early as their freshman year, managing opponent scouting, alumni relations, mentoring student-athletes, coordinating recruiting visits, and overseeing scheduling and summer camps.
Before LSU, Moore spent 16 seasons at Northwestern State University under longtime head coach Mike McConathy, serving as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator.
Moore is no stranger to BPCC. He served as an assistant coach for the Cavaliers during the 2005-06 season, helping the team capture both the Miss-Lou Conference title and tournament championship, earning a berth in the Region 23 Tournament for the first time in five years.
“Coach Moore brings a wealth of experience, a proven record of success and a deep connection to our region,” said BPCC Athletic Director Amanda Nordberg. “We are thrilled to welcome him back to the Cavaliers family and know he will have an immediate impact on our program and our student-athletes. His passion for the game and his commitment to developing young men align perfectly with BPCC’s mission.”
A 1997 graduate of Northwestern State University with a master’s degree in education and emphasis in athletic administration, Moore and his wife, Amy, have two children: Gracie, a freshman volleyball player at Blinn College, and Caige, an eighth grader active in football and baseball.
Planned water service interruption and possible boil advisory for Dogwood Trail residents
The Bossier Parish Consolidated Waterworks/Sewerage District No. 1 warns residents in the Dogwood Trail subdivision about a possible water service interruption from Wednesday through Thursday.
The contractor working for CWSD # 1 has informed parish officials that the tie-ins on the water lines are scheduled to be completed this week. They say part of the tie-in process may involve shutting off the water to hundreds of homes in the area. If water pressure is lost for any period during the tie-ins, a mandatory boil advisory will be issued upon restoration of the water service.
The boil advisory will affect residents living in the 8600 block of Dogwood Trail to the 9300 block of Dogwood Trail.
Water samples will be collected and submitted to the Louisiana Department of Health’s Office of Public Health in Shreveport for testing. The boil advisory will remain in place until officials confirm the water is safe for consumption.
